The official mascot of Texas
A&M University is "Reveille", a full bred American Collie,
who's history goes back to 1931. At
that time, a group of cadets accidentally ran over a black and white dog
in their model T on the way back to campus, so they gathered up the
injured dog and took it back to the dormitory.
In the morning when reveille sounded, the dog started barking and
howling, and promptly received her nickname.
Reveille was soon adopted by
the Corps of Cadets and especially by the band. She began following them to all formations and led them when
they marched. At the first
football game that year, she took the field with the band, and made her
first appearance as the official mascot of Texas A&M.
Reveille I died in 1944 and was
buried at the north end of Kyle Field, where as tradition has it she can
always see the scoreboard. Reveille
II and III followed, and in recent years, an American Collie has been the
mascot. Reveille IV, was
presented by Dr. Thomas L. Goodwin, Class of "67".
